I stated Pat, that you can WEAR EITHER a "blank" 1 year pin
(if you can find them, by burrowing deep into the "year pin
bin") OR (the most common) wear the 1 year pin. In EITHER
case, he wears it with the orange Tiger Cub backing.

The BSA still DOES use the stars without the numbers in them,
and I have nine of those stars (five sent to me from National Supply two
years ago this weekend) still in my possession. If
you check in the "star bin" at your Council office, you *may*

The plain stars were last used to denote local Council awards of the
ill-fated Youth Leadership in America Awards, last awarded in 1989. If you
have ONE year and ONLY one year of service, you may still wear that plain
star provided you have the appropriate backing for it, and as Hugh stated,
you're registered during
that tenure period.
Those plain stars are also available from some memorbilia traders/sellers as
well for those that want them for "period uniforms".
Jim's correct, however, in stating that since 1980, the BSA decided to use
the stars with the numbers (1-9, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and now 80) to
denote youth and adult tenure within the movement.

They are, and the Girl Scouting stars are six-sided (at least the two year
pin I have here is six-sided) with the numbers 1-9, 10 , etc. on them!
