The Sea Badge courses are NOT "Explorer wood badge" courses. The Seabadge
courses are conducted as *specific advanced training* for Sea Exploring
leaders, those volunteers and professionals working with Sea Exploring
programs, and those selected Area and Regional volunteers selected to
attend the course. While there are some similarities, the course is very
different than the traditional "Wood Badge" course, and there's no beads
presented. Graduates of the Seabadge course wear the Seabadge.
No youth members are permitted to attend the Seabadge course.
This is different from the Exploring Advanced Seminars and the Exploring
Leadership Institute, the two courses which have been certified by the
National Exploring Division, BSA as meeting the same "level of training"
as those participating in Cub Scout Trainer Wood Badge, Boy Scout Leader
Wood Badge and Varsity Leader Wood Badge courses.
Graduates of either course PRESENTLY do not wear ANYTHING to signify their
graduation/certification of the course, although a really nice device has
been recommended and is being reviewed for *possible* approval.
At one time the BSA did consider offering "Exploring Woodbadge" and there
were several experimental courses (including one at Philmont) conducted.
I participated in the third of those experimental courses at the
National Explorer Presidents Congress in Washington in March of 1978.
The BSA's National Exploring Division still expresses a desire for either of
the two present-day courses to become "Wood Badge" bead-producing courses
but the Program Group has steadfastly stated "nope".
They'll change their minds someday...in the meantime, if Exploring leaders
are REALLY interested in advanced training, bug your Exploring Executive/
Director/staff member in charge of Exploring to have someone to come and
put on the Advanced Seminar...or do like Kathie is going to do this summer,
go to Philmont, get certified to conduct the courses, and come back and
put them on in *your Council*.
"Young Jim" (JJRjr) went to Philmont this past summer, loved it, and is
now certified as a "National Exploring Instructor", eligible to conduct
Exploring training (including the Advanced Seminar) in Hudson-Liberty or
within his Regional Area.
Those in the Western Region get the ELI course, which when I took it in
1989, comes the CLOSEST to an "Exploring Wood Badge" course that anything
else in the BSA! If you get a chance to attend that course, I would HIGHLY
recommend it!!
