The "M" in wood badge course numbers in the Western Region stands for
"Metropolitan" and is assigned to courses being conducted by the councils
located in the larger or metropolitan areas. Those course which involve more
than one council have a host council and that council number is used in
designating the course. I have conducted courses under using both systems.
WE4-51-83 which was a course involving scouters from Wesrtern Los Angeles
Area council, Ventura Area council, Mission Council(Santa Barbara), Southern
Sierra (bakersfield area) and the Santa Lucia area council(San Luis Obispo).
The host council was Western LA and therefore the council number 51 was used.
I also conducted WEM-51-83 which was a single council course and primarily
involved scouters from WLACC.
The last number Mike mentioned is the particpants certificate number. This
number is assigned to participants arranged alphabetically by patrol.
The Western region system makes more sense. I originally went through course
W4-51-1 and served on staff for course W4-51-1. The E designates a week-end
course, while those without the "E" are weeklong courses.
