Okay...
I feel that you should strive for two presenations, one with your
unit (if you're a unit Scouter) and another as part of the Council
or District's program at their next major event.
By having your beads presented during a Troop's Court of Honor
or a Troop Meeting/reception, to me it cements several things
that we are trying to impress upon our Scouts (and Scouters):
* Training. Training is just as important for the adults in our
units as it is for the Scouts. The Wood Badge experience is designed to
allow those Scouters undertaking it to understand
the operation and basic concepts of our Boy Scouting program.
The adults will see (and EXPECT) that the Wood Badge experience
is something that perhaps they should strive to participate in.
* Personal Achievement. Every Troop has some Scouts that have
not advanced in part because they don't see "what good is it?".
Like we recognize Eagles with their own Court of Honor and
"fuss over them", the recognition of the completion of the advanced training
course for Scouters should be, in my opinion,
something that merits Scouts witnessing if for no other reason
other than to "spur those Scouts onward"
* Promotion. Not in the "rank sense", but in the "awareness
sense". Your unit has a lot of Scouters that are wondering if
the additional weekends/week and costs of Wood Badge is worth
the investment. They can view the "payoff". So can that Troop
Committee and chartering partner organization as well. This also
again puts your unit in the community spotlight and allows for
perhaps an increase in the number of new youth to join in part
because "they have a Wood Badger as a leader over there", even
if they just read the words "wood badge" in the paper and really
have no clue as to what it means other than the article was
written about "Jim's personal training achievement..."
I've had the honor of assisting in a lot of unit presentations
and have watched those units grow and susequent Scouters from
that same unit selected to attend susequent Wood Badge courses.
However, the "District/Council" event presentations are usually
better attended, brings a large number of Scouters from the
Wood Badge Troop to attend, and of course, gives us all ONE MORE
EXCUSE to sing together the Wood Badge Song, "Back to Gilwell"
once again.
Keep the unit presentation in mind, Jim, and even if you don't
decide that's the kind of presentation you want, you might want to
consider a unit ceremony for a Scouter down the road. We're all
very proud of your achievement, and for your hard work in obtaining your
beads. Please let us all know about the ceremony
(which ceremony), and don't forget to share this special occasion
with your wife and family (I took mine out for ice cream afterwards!)
