I sent the question about the presentation of the Silver Beaver to our
Council Office (Our Council Dinner was just last Friday) and got a reply
from our Council Executive, Doug McDonald.
Most councils I know of, at least in No. Calif., hold an annual recognition
dinner to honor volunteers, the highlight being the presentation of the Silver
Beaver, as our council did last Friday evening. It is intended to be a
celebration and done with class. Our most often heard complaint, tho, is the
cost and it's true that doing dinners is getting more expensive, especially at
a hotel or other class location, so I can see why a council might try a
dessert event as many districts have gone to. Some councils have had the
ability to do potlucks, even in some of the bigger councils this is the
tradition. The Region does luncheons when it presents the Antelopes as part
of the National Annual Meeting. This probably sheds no great light on the
question, but perhaps explains some of the concerns we struggle with.
