1997 National Jamboree

Doug Gentry (dwgentry@POLARCONSULT.COM)

The 1997 National Jamboree is only 17 months away (give or take). It is
scheduled for late July - early August 1997.

Councils have begun the process of organizing to recruit and staff
provisional troops - made up of Scouts from throughout their Council. In
your Council there may already be a Jamboree Committee and they may have
already selected (or will soon select) their adult leadership.

Sometime beginning this Spring (maybe as late as May or June), there will
be efforts in each Council to recruit Scouts to participate in the
Jamboree. Each Council has its own application process. If you haven't
heard of anything yet - don't despair. A quiet word through your unit
commissioner, Roundtable or DE might get you some information. Just stay
tuned for the Council announcement.

Meanwhile, the National Council and the Regional offices are starting to
recruit staff members (older youth and adults) to work on the staff of the
Jamboree. Application forms for these staff positions are available in
many/most Councils.

The Jamboree is a lifetime-of-memories event. It is worth keeping abreast
of your local developments and letting your guys know. If you have Scouts
who went to the 1993 Jamboree, they may be interested in applying for a
staff position for 1997.

Like to find out more? Here are some resources:

--> Don Tolin has an excellent Web page at
http://w3.trib.com/~dont/scouting/jambo97.html
(please note the "w3" is correct, and not an abbreviation for "www".)
The trib.com server has been balky lately, but you should be
able to get in.

--> Many of your fellow Scouts-L members are also members of the list,
Jambo97. We have over 200 members - many of whom have experience as
Jamboree leaders or staff members. If you'd like to join our discussion or
reach us for some questions, you can subscribe to the list by sending an
e-mail to:

majordomo@hoplite. org ("majordomo" is a listserv, like the one we
use on this list)

In the body of the message, type: subscribe jambo97

If you prefer digest form, type this instead: subscribe jambo97-digest

****

Bottom line: Don't sweat if you haven't heard from your Council about
Jamboree participation. Just keep your ear to the ground, and ask at round
tables.

If you're interested in working on the Jamboree staff, ask at your Council
office for a *staff* application form.

Other questions - feel free to join the Jambo97 list or to e-mail me directly.

...Doug Gentry
