Paul Brown posted some really GREAT information on the comparison
between coffee and other soft drinks. As a person that believes
that "there's no such thing as strong coffee, only weak people",
I wouldn't give a Scout coffee...but neither will I deny the
right of a Patrol to include coffee in their menus.
I started drinking coffee when I was ten years old, and have
continued to do so since. I also smoked cigarettes (Pall-Mall,
one of the strongest) from the sixth to the start of the
eighth grade. Then, I saw a demostration on what cigarettes
can do to your lungs, and when I heard the loud POP!, that
affected whether or not I put ANYTHING on fire next to my mouth
again!!! I immmediately stopped smoking that afternoon, and have
never picked up a cigarette with intentions on smoking it since.
(Yes, I have picked up my share of cigarette butts when I was
enlisted, and had to go out on "detail").
Coffee is the only drug that I abuse. I know that I abuse it, because I'm
now into my SECOND pot of coffee, and the first one
was made about two and a half hours ago. However, I don't
recommend it to Scouts, and I only bring it up with other Scouters
because it seems to be a common drink. I used to like hot chocolate but I
really didn't like it, especially when it isn't
made right (I like mine really on the chocolate side, and most
water-based mixes are more chalky than chocolately). Tea is okay
but again, it just doesn't have that *punch* that coffee has.
As Scouters, we need to be aware of the fact that not ALL of our
Scouts (and fellow Scouters) do NOT partake of caffiene, either
for religious, taste or personal preference reasons. That doesn't
make THEM "weak". It, instead, makes them STRONG for expressing
their preference for water, milk or even Gatorade. This is yet
*another reason* why particularly as Scoutmasters, we need to
sit with EACH Scout and ASK BEFORE we're embarrassed by "good
intentions" by a Scout or Scouter stating "I can't drink this."
The BSA, as well as other national youth programs, all have strong
statements against the usage of tobacco and tobacco-based products
by youth and adult members. Rather than to repeat it here for those not
familiar with the policy, I refer you to the current
edition of the "Safe Guide to Scouting" as far as the BSA is concerned, and
leader publications of the Girl Scouts of the USA
and 4H for their official words. We should as much as we can
to discourage usage of tobacco products by our youth members and
by adult members in the prescence of youth.
I *stop* at places that have pots of coffee...cold, hot, strong
or weak. Don't believe me...ask Jessi! (She's even teased me
about knowing which places has the best coffee here in town!)
