Hi Drew!
Man, It's like I've just answered this question. Rather than
to send it to you personally, I wanted to send the information
as background for anyone interested.
Boy Scouts and Scouters DO have a "POW-WOW", and it's called
"SHOWANDO" (from the words "SHOW AND DO", which is the purpose
of the event). SHOWANDOs started, as much of our programs,
from three distinct locations in the nation, all doing about
the same type of event.
On the west coast, two Councils had a Camporee with the theme
"Sharing Scouting Skills". During the two-day event, each
Patrol was asked to develop a Scouting skill, and be ready to
demostrate it to the others during the event. This could be
as simple as lashing poles, or as difficult as creating a model
of "family relations" (remember that this was back in the days
of the Skill Award).
In Atlanta, the Scout Show has always emphasize the ability of
each and every Troop to "show off what they know".
In North Carolina, the Uharrire Council developed the first
"prototype" for the Showando concept, and all of that Council's
Districts developed *training* programs around it.
SHOWANDO as a training program really took off with the "improved
Scouting program" in the early 70s. It was one of the components
neccessary for Scouters to receive the special "trained patch"
for their position.
It lost favor somewhere in the later seventies when the ALL
OUT FOR SCOUTING! program knocked some collective sense in
our brains and brought us back to to what Scouting is all about.
Still, there are many Councils that conduct Showandos in
connection with the Cub Scout POW WOW and Exploring Advanced
Seminars on a coordinated training weekend.
Hope this information helps you out...we do have a version,
but today, there's not a whole lot of Councils that do it for
training..most do it for promotion and exposition only.
