Cliff Golden raises some interesting points, I'd like to reply to:
<A sport is a short intensive program, mostly lasting a few months,
whereas Scouting is a long term committment, year round, for
several years. >
Yes, Cliff. I can live without scouts for a few weeks if needed, but
what do you do about the Scout who plays football till it freezes,
basketball until it thaws and baseball until it's time for football again.
This is common for many leaders who literally never see
some 'scouts'.
<Sometimes people ask me how Scouting can compete with all
these sports and other interests. My answer is this, wedon't
compete, we cooperate.>
EXACTLY the problem, Cliff. We cooperate with kids who tell us
something is more important for a while. The reason for this thread
is the high number of coaches who never cooperate with US!
Threatening/benching players who miss one game of a 50-game
season isn't realistic, but that's the attitude many face. When you
loose one third of your troop, mostly older scouts, because coaches
have an 'all or nothing' attitude it DOES put a healthy crimp in your
program. This affects the remaining Scouts too.
It used to be in many cities that Mon. was for Scouts, Wed. was for
churches, and sports had Tue, Thu and Fri. Everyone cooperated.
This, sadly, is no longer the case as multiple posts have noted.
.
If it isn't MUTUAL, it isn't cooperation
