Re: Pen-pals in Bulgaria

Ray,

It is good to hear of your trip to Bulgaria. Unfortunately, your message
does not seem to have made it completely to the list, at least not to Digest
mode readers such as myself.

I have been to Bulgaria four times, the first two on business and the last
two as a Scout leader. Each time I have found the country and people to be
very enjoyable. It is a shame that so little seems to be known Bulgaria and
Bulgarian Scouts in the west.

I encourage everyone, but especially young people, to participate in the
pen-pal program that Ray suggests. Some cities now have e-mail stations at
public libraries. However, you should be aware that it costs them to both
send and receive messages. Therefore, I suggest you use regular post, which
takes about two weeks each way from the States.

If anyone is interested in learning some Bulgarian, I have copies of a
Bulgarian/English phrase book with accompanying tapes made by native
speakers. These were produced as part of a U.S. government grant that
brought 20 Bulgarian Scouts and leaders to the U.S. to learn Scouting skills
in 1994.

In 1993 and 1995 I lead Scouting trips to Bulgaria, where we stayed with
Scout families, camped on the Black Sea, and toured the country. The last
trip cost $1,200 per person for a three-week trip, about 1/3 what the World
Jamboree cost for U.S. Scouts. This cost includes airfare, which is quite
reasonable if you fly on Balkan Airlines from the U.S. So, there is a good
chance you could visit the people you correspond with.

I will be arranging another Scout trip to Bulgaria, probably in 1997 or
1998. However, if you are interested in going there before that, let me
know and I'll gladly help you.
