Lisa-
I took some time to answer, because I wanted some time to ponder. I
agree with you, that hitting the mall for the sake of shopping is not an
appropriate activity, but then if you can turn it into one, great. My
oldest daughters troop (Cadette) went to our local mall, to work on
some badge work. They did a comparison shopping activity (have a certain
amount of maoney --monoply) and shop for items on a list. An adult was
with each group (3-4 girls), and acted as the cashier when the group
purchased an item. Later they visited one of the salons in the mall and
got a tour and hair/make-up advise. Finally they spent some time
shopping...But they had a limit of $30.00 that the girls could spend. Most
of them came home with some new make up and hair products that they
learned about at the salon. They spent 3 hours at the mall, and had
plenty of time and fun.
On your quandry on what to do...you could always put some road blocks in
their way. Here we have to have certain adults with specific training to
go on any kind of trip. The first that a registered adult have Basic III
(beyond the meeting place) training. The second that there is someone
with the group that has First Aid /CPR. Finally they have to get SUM
approval. I know locally, that the trained Basic III person is usually
the leader. Refuse to go unless they do some of the activities. They
can then either find another adult with the appropriate training, or do
the activities (and most likely have fun), or not go as a scouting
activity. Another course is to talk to the SUM and have her disapprove
of the activity (if she agrees with you), and make suggestions on what
can gain her approval (the activities). Honsetly around here, the SUM
approval is usually based solely on whether the appropriately trained
people are going along. But I could see getting ours to help out in this
type of situation.
Best of luck... and I hope things work out for the best.
