This is a good point! Unfortunately it is because of our good? friends
at Microsoft, not the individual users. Here is what you can do about
it: (interested readers will recognize the author from another context...)

Open your mail address book [for Microsoft Mail],
highlight the entry for this list [Scouts-L, Arrow-L, etc],
click on the Properties button,
make sure the "rich text" box is NOT checked.
