A Surprize Last Night

Todd Norman Tingblad (tingbltn@UWEC.EDU)

Had an interesting thing happen to me last night at our first troop meeting
of 1996. The only reason we had the meeting was to prepare for out yearly
trek to Indianhead Council's Snowbase Winter Camping (camping in the
snowbank).

When I was arriving with all my Winter Camping Equipment for my demo, one of
the Webelos parents visiting for the meeting, asked how work was. I told him
that I had been off for 12 days so I am sure there is a mess waiting for me
in Eau Claire, WI. He looked at me strangely and said, "Don't you work in
St. Paul, MN?" My answer was no and why he thought I worked in St. Paul? He
replyed, "Isn't that were the council office is?"

SURPRISE...This parent and Den Leader thought I worked for the Indianhead
Council. Wow!!!

Just going my Unit Commissioner Job for these past three years and Asst.
Scoumaster for 17 years. Wearing my full uniform and bring all that
important Scouting information back to the units I serve has made an
impression for sure.

I never viewed myself as the "end all...know it all" of Scouting, much less a
Paid Professional Scouter. It sure was nice to know that I do a good job in
the unit leader's eyes of helping them bring Scouting to them and their kids.
I sure was a nice feeling. I hope that my example will help this Webelos Den
Leader to continue in the Boy Scout program.

So it is back to reality...I'm just one of thousands doing his part to hrlp
bring the adventure of Scouting to as many as possible.

YiS,

Todd Tingblad -- tingbltn@uwec.edu
