achieving goals

Last week I asked what was the goal of scouting. I received many
responses both offline and on line. Some were thoughtful
considerations of scouting and others were regurgitations of printed
material. Regardless, they were all worth reading.
Goals are important in the journey through life. It has been said that
if you don't have a goal how are you going to know when you get there.
This lends itself to the observation that knowing if you are there
depends on being able to have a definitive and measureable goal.
So, getting back to the goals of scouting, how do we measure
attainment of the goal. How do we know when we get there? What are
the measures? How do we know if we are being successful? What is
success and failure? How does National BSA measure success and
failure? How, and by what standards do we identify those areas that
need improvement?
