SPL, PL elections and Other Troop Positions

Kevin S Woods ,

You asked some very good questions about elections. If I may I
would like to share with you and the others our procedures.

In Troop 713, our scouts are elected or appointed for 4 months ( the
last troop meeting in November, March and July). A scout may not
succeed himself in a position.

Each positions has minimum rank requirements. The SPL and ASPL must
have completed two advanced Jr. Leadership Training ( Oak Leaf and
Golden Acorn) courses provided by the District and Council. I can
see for a new troop you could not stipulate too much at first. This
helps spread the jobs over our troop.

Our SPL, ASPL, PL and APL are the only elected positions. Until
recently the adult leaders would advise the Leadership advisor of
candidates for the remaining Troop positions. There was alot of
haggling and campaigning between the adults as to which boys would
get what job. It was embarrassing to watch.

Scout-L list provided us with the idea for the approach we are
currently using. It makes much more sense for the SPL and ASPL to do
the choosing of the appointed positions. Several weeks before the
elections the boys sign up for consideration for a Troop position.
All of the SPL candidates watched the sign-up sheet and encouraged
others to do so. ( It is great, the Leadership advisor makes sure
the boys are qualified for the positions they are signing up for and
steps back!)

The boys knows who would fulfill their obligation for leadership.

Hope this helps,

YIS,
