Proper Uniforming: reply to Steve and Mike

Re: The thread on proper uniforming, and posts by Steve and Mike.

I would have to say that I agree more with Steve than Mike, on the statement
of the number of _correctly_ uniformed Scouters at a District function. I
have only personal experience to go by, here, but what else can we go by to
base our views of the world.

A quick mental examination of _my_ normal uniform reveals: _no_ official
socks (I usually only wear those to Camporees or really important things,
since you wouldn't even find me _dead_ wearing _shorts_ ! :) ), Quality
Unit patch that is 2 years out of date, improper roll on the neckerchief,
and threadbare cuffs on the pants.

But here is a side of the problem that has not been mentioned. When I bought
my second uniform shirt for my Wood Badge class, and began putting patches on
it, I found out the the shirt itself wasn't uniform. The pockets were in the
wrong places. I was putting the World Crest on the shirt. The SMHB says 3
inches below the shoulder seam, directly above the left pocket. Know where
that was, on this shirt? Under the collar! So I moved it.

The overall _impression_, though, is complete and correct uniform. And I
think tha's what counts. It's kind of like that neat picture of Mars that you
can display on your computer. The closer you get to detail, the more it looks
like a collection of coloured dots than like Mars. Right? You wouldn't get
the impression of a correct uniform if the person were wearing jeans, or had
no insignia, or wrongly placed insignia, on the shirt.

Steve has also asked what the penalty would be for not wearing the full or
correct uniform. In one of my uniform inspections, were you a boy, you would
not get the points for that item on the uniform inspection competition. That's
all. We _don't_ inspect adults.

As far as military uniforms, I still remember wearing my "dixie cup" to the
back of my head, rather than 1 finger over the eyebrows. And I still remember
getting 7734 from my surperiors about it. ;) (BTW, that was Coast Guard, not
Navy. ;) )
