Sorry you haven't gotten more responses -- I didn't join this group until
11/18 (I have the "You are subscribed to the SCOUTS-L list" message to prove
it.) I'm not sure if you are looking for a theme for the entire camporee or
specific activities for the weekend. It's been a long time since I was at a
camporee but, here goes.
BURN THE STRING - set up 2 strings, the first about 12 inches high and the
second about 18. Then give each patrol a piece of wood (a 2x6x12 works good)
and 2 matches. They are to cut up the board (using their own knives and axes)
and build a fire no higher than the lower string. Then, using no more than
the 2 matches, light the fire and burn the upper string.
DISABILITY AWARENESS - These series of events took first place at our
council's 30th anniversary Jubilee this past September. Unfortunately, the
line was long and our Cubs had just stood in line for 1-1/2 hours to climb
the rope bridge so we missed this event. One of the events I heard about was
a wheelchair "race". One boy sits in the wheelchair and another must push the
chair through an obstacle course. In another event, a boy's arm was disabled
(tied to his side) and he had to perform a number of tasks. I'm not sure
exactly what they did but some things like putting on clothes, tieing shoes,
etc. would work. In another event, boys were blindfolded and had to negotiate
their way through some obstacles such as stairs and doors.
ORIENTEERING - Start boys at a specific location and have them follow compass
directions and estimate distance to see how close they can come to a specific
target.
FIRST AID - We used to have a First Aid Meet each spring but, there are some
events that could be done at a camporee such as creating a litter and
transporting a person. Of course, this could also include treating a number
of injuries before moving the person.
I'm sorry I don't have more ideas for you. As I said, it's been quite a while
since I've been to a camporee. Hope these help.
