First I will put on my Nomex. Amen on military uniform irregularities. I
doodled a fox, similar to a Patrol badge, on my helmet cover; and all sorts
of things got written on all sorts of helmet covers/bands, some of which I
could post up here and some of which I could not. I carried an Browning
Hi-Power I got from a VC who didn't need it any more (it was manufactured
for U. S. market, meaning I repossessed it), rather than the issue .45,
because I thought I could hit something with it in case of need. Some
people would trade their .45's for extra bandages. The boys in the boonies
were not in regulation, and heaven help a REMF moved up to the boonies who
decided they ought to be. Myself, when I was out I preferred clear heads
and clean weapons to any other category.
Better the twelve points of the law in the heart, than the 100 points of
the uniform on the body. I always liked the Canadian Scout rule: if you
have the neckerchief of your unit on, you are in uniform. Activity uniform
is otherwise whatever you want to wear. Formal uniform is for public events
and formal occasions. The Canadian rule keeps it simple, and I think it
works better than the not-so-uniform mix we often get of here a shirt,
there some slacks, there some shorts, there some Scout sox, there some
jeans, there some red socks, etc. etc. Why not be uniform about the lack of
uniformity.

P. S. I wear a full uniform, with a Fox pin on my hat.....
