MB classes outside of troop meetings

Hi all,

I have no problem with merit badge classes outside of troop meetings.
In effect, if a scout visits a counselor with a scout buddy who also
needs the merit badge, the counselor is conducting a class anyway
(although a small one).

When I was a scout, I earned forestry merit badge with a MBC in our
troop who took 6-8 of us around on weekends to learn tree
identification, took us on a reforestation project, and so on. Also,
I earned swimming, lifesaving and other badges in classes at summer
camp--how most summer camp merit badges are earned, it seems. On the
other hand, I earned my citizenship badges one-on-one (no doubt a YPP
violation today).

I personally am also conducting a cooking merit badge class with three
scouts (not at troop meetings, though), one of whom has finished and
the other two of whom will finish up in a couple of weeks, after our
December camping trip.

I agree with Kevin Woods that some merit badges more readily lend
themselves to classes than others. Cooking, for example, works really
well with a group, because the boys have to cook for at least three
people.

Classes are okay as long as they are away from troop meetings. The
boys still have to affirmatively sign up for the merit badge, interact
with the counselor and complete the work.
