I agree with Kevin that some merit badges such as First Aid,
Life Saving and others will work best as a group. In fact
our troop has in the past organized a SWIM night/swimming
life saving MB class program outside of the troop meeting time.
It is hard if not imposible for a single scout to get first aid,
or life sasving 1 on 1. Granted MOST summer camp programs offer
fisrt aid, and life saving and/or swimming, but the 1 summer
my own sone needed First AId, was the summer the did NOT teach
it at the camp he attended.
ALSO, as a conselor for Communications, I like to coordinate with
the scout master and SPL for the scouts doing communications,
to do parts of the requirements at a scount function, to include
give a 5 minute speech (presentation), and develope a plan
(lesson plan) to teach a skill. Also some of the others such
as act as an MC for an event like a Court of Honor, or Dinner,
introduce a guest speaker, can work in nicely to a troop meeting.
HOWEVER, I normally expect the scouts to take about 2 months
to complete communication! It is never a 1 meeting deal.
One other question for the group. Both Citizenship in the
community and Communications have - attend a town meeting
as a requirement. If scouts are working on BOTH badges,
do YOU think they should have to attend 2 meetings?
