Eagle Palms/Leadership

Dan OCanna (ocanna@ALPHA.CAER.UKY.EDU)

Rick (Covington?) asked:

"Wow, how can you equate an Eagle Scout's leadership qualities to the
number of Palms he wears!"

I seem to remember something about a good leader being first a good follower.
That seems to be the point being made. Just how draconian one needs to be
in enforcing the rules is open to discussion. My personal method is to
look at the aims of Scouting, see how the situation fits, and make a
decision based on what the program is trying to accomplish.

Steve in Newark makes some good points about uniforms. My personal minimum
is for a boy to be wearing a tan shirt with correct patches. Anything
above that minimum is a goal to strive for. A full, complete uniform with
correct insignia will always get a compliment from me. If a guy who barely
has the "minmum uniform" participates actively in the program I feel the
aims of Scouting are being served, and I'll try to get him to wear more
as time goes on. Eagle Scouts SHOULD lead by example. I'm not sure
I'd carp about a guy wearing more than one palm, too much.

PS. When wearing long Scout pants I don't always wear Scout sox. Flame
me if you wish.
