The one that's illustrated is one that has the darker khahi background on

You have it upside down.

If you look at the way it would look compared to other knots, you can see
that it's upside down. Compare the AOL knot you have against the Medal of
Merit, the James West, or the old Silver Award knots which all have
constrasting colors as part of their design. In all three cases, it is the
"distinguishing color" which is worn on the left side, which the BSA
National staff find hard to explain.
The "distinguishing color" (the best explaination is the " "lighter" of the
two colors") is usually white, gold (yellow) or red. That's the best way to
find out if you are wearing a knot "upside down" or "upside right". It
doesn't help much for the Tiger Cub Leader's Award knot. The second best
way (my way) is to see where the "bump" is...the place where the rope comes
OVER the two strands. In all cases, that "bump", as illustrated on the
Whitney Young knot (where the white rope is over both strands) is on the
wearer's right side (as you are looking at it). This can also distinguish
the "side" that the knot should be worn on.

There are a couple of errors in the Insignia Guide, and that's one of them.
The AOL should be worn with the red side on the left side and the green side
worn to the right side.
Look in the current Scoutmasters' Handbook, in the section illustrating all
of the square knots. The Green side is the side that should be worn to the
wearer's right.
Just to make sure, I'll call the BSA's Insignia guys at the first of next
week and find out for sure if they didn't switch the knot's appearance on
me. If so, I have a lot of shirts to replace.
