I carry a cellular phone almost everywhere now. Most locations in the US
have good coverage. There are still some areas, probably around
wilderness and low populated areas, which do not have coverage. You can
count on cellular most of the time and certainly along well-travelled
routes or near larger population areas. I forward my home phone to my
cellular, leave instructions that EMERGENCY calls may be made to us. If
my phone is off or in a bad area, messages go to my voice mail. I check
it at least once per day. A few years ago, it seemed that every place we
went was just a few miles beyond the cell service, but not so much
anymore. You will need to experiment with the locations to be sure.
Woods do not affect use much at all. It is just that woods tend to be in
wilderness areas where there might be no coverage.
I highly recommend cell phones for emergency communications..
