Well, That is what counts isn't it? That, and the (youth) leaders get to deal w
ith the situation of "What do you
do when the plan doesn't work?" A lesson many Adults don't want them to have.
For example, my Explorer Post had a beach campout planned to Corpus Christi, Tex
as a couple of years ago,
but they forgot to check the weather before we left one bright sunny Spring day.

Driver) Well, after arriving to find the beaches at the State Park closed, they
decided to try the Padre Island
National Seashore nearby, It was open, but they did not like the looks of the s
ituation with the tide rising. (I
was very proud, and relieved not to have to 'advise' them at this point. So, th
ey checked a couple of nearby
motels and discovered they did not have the funds to stay there. Then one of th
e kids used his map reading
skills and found another State Park nearby. So we loaded up and drove there onl
y to find they we also closed,
but only due to the fact it was now after 2:00 am.
Luckily, someone spotted a sign for a Boy Scout Camp on the way into the Park, a
nd we were able to drive
over there and spend what was left of the night on their front porch so to speak
. The next morning while eating
a quick breakfast in order to beat the approaching cold front, they decided we s
hould see the sights we could
see, then return home that night as they had not anticipated the 30-40 degree te
mperature drop. We did have
a blast touring the USS Lexington and the Texas State Aquarium, but those where
not the things they
discussed when recalling all the 'fun' on that trip. And that crew was always a
little more observant about the
weather, and they never again gave me a hard time about packing a coat for a tri
p to the beach.
