Mike Derleth,
Unfortunately a single allegation of misconduct can ruin your reputation
and damage Scouting's image. Media retractions are rare and never front
page like the earlier sensation. And speaking from experience in
investigative/prosecutive matters the statements of relatives/household
members are usually not persuasive to either the press, child services, or a
jury. Too much is at risk not to insist that the Scout be accompanied by
another Scout or adult from outside your family. We'd like to have
things the way they were in the days of our youth where trust was given,
but sadly this is no longer the case.
Speaking only for myself in the Scouting Spirit, Michael F. Bowman
