Re: Helping a Scout w/Tradgedy

Vincent:

I'm shaking as I write this. As a woman, I have to feel scared about
a situation like this. Hope my writing is not too... whatever...

I have to second Bill's comment: things MUST stay normal for your
boy. He is already surrounded by so many handicaps, you can't allow
friendship and good work to become another one.

About the other boys in the troop... it's a hard question weather the
Patrol Leaders should know, but I would consider it as a posiblity.
Having some one just like you (I mean, a young boy just your age) to
understand and help might be very good.

About the parents... well, here in Mexico it would be a different
situation, starting with me not working with boys, but girls. I
would try to find out if they are seeking professional help, and if
not, find a friendly and smooth way to suggest it. Besides, try to
suggest legal actions, such a pursuit of the guy who raped her. This
is not intended to be a revenge, but an act of gender solidarity to
other possible victims.

About THE boy... help him by showing him new ways, good ways. I think
this is the best moment for you and your other Troop Leader to start
planning your next year's activities. When you do so, PLEASE include
teen sexual education, but not just the normal stuff all youngsters
get at school. Talk about love, romance, relationships (good and
bad, natural and loving vs. sick and hating ones, etc.) ?Objective?
To discover that, no matter what reasons there are for things to
happen to you, you can make a difference... you MUST do so. Show
your boys how they can become bad people if they do not learn to get
the best of any situation. Show them how they will get bad
relationships if they have bad attitudes.

Hope it's useful... and believe me, I am VERY SORRY! :((((((((
