Re: Passing the Torch

When I gave up being cubmaster, we made a point of doing a brief installation
ceremony for the new cubmaster and assistants. It was simple but impressive.
The committee chair and the institution head presented the new CM and CAs with
their badges of office and I passed the ceremonial staff to the new CM.
After that, I made a point of referring all questions to the CM--I think this
is essential. It only took a couple of months before people stopped asking
me first and getting my "You'll have to check with John on that one!" response.
When I gave up being scoutmaster, I completely separated from the unit (moved
to the other side of the council). Again, we did a simple ceremony as part
of the closing of my last meeting as SM. The committee chair came and the
new SM was presented with his badge of office and installed with a few
kind words. They gave me a desk pen set and letter opener with the troop
number and years I served on it. I gave the troop flag a final salute and
left. The troop continued with the closing ceremony.
