keeping warm this weekend

Having just returned from our Troop's November campout which
turned out to be a good chance to test the methods mentioned in
the past weeks on cold weather camping. Thanks for the timely
tips! Where else but on Scouts-L!

On Thursday the temp here in the Metro Detroit Area was 60-70
degrees. We left Friday evening as the temp was dropping into the
mid 30's, and a wind chill of 9, with 10 of the Troops younger boys.
As we arrived after a 3+hour drive, the upper portion of Lower
Michigan (Grayling) was receiving 8+ inches of snow and the temps
for the weekend were expected at a high of 30 for Saturday and a
low of 10-15 for Saturday night. It was a beautiful setting with 8-10
fluffy inches of snow all over, the boys set up at 11PM and snuggled
down for a chilly night. Saturday evening they cooked tri-pod turkey
with stuffing, corn, mashed potatoes and cooked three homemade
pumpkin pies in dutch ovens. Saturday was a crystal clear evening
and the temps skidded to single digits. We had them all change
from their wet clothes into dry clothes, urinate as close to going to
bed time as possible, wear a dry hat and I had brought some extra
blankets to throw over or into bags and they all made it through OK.

No problems except one young fellow only brought one pair of shoes
(leather tennis shoes) so was constantly warming his shoes by the
fire, but he survived OK as we kept a good eye on him. All earned
their polar bear patch (some a little early) and besides the grumbling
Friday all had a great time. Thanks to all who posted with those
tips!

Yours in the spirit of ScOUTing,

Mark
