Hi all!
I am new to this mail list. I have been active in Cub Scout Pack 34 in
Hanson, MA for over eight years- first as a den mother and then as treasurer
and committee member. I found this list somehow and have enjoyed reading the
posts over the past three weeks. I spent today laughing over the Dave Barry
post (scouts in tents) and crying over Mike Walton's tribute to the three
eagle scouts who have died recently. What a wonderful group of people you
meet when you get involved with Scouting!
The one topic that really piqued my interest was the discussion about Boy
Scouts versus Girl Scouts and whether or not girls should be allowed into Boy
Scouts. IMHO, I think that would be a mistake. If the girls are that
interested in the Boy Scout program, obviously the Girl Scout program should
be modified to include the activities open to the boys. I firmly believe Boy
Scouts should be with men. Scouting is a way for boys to learn from male
role models-especially if there is no father to learn from. What better way
for a fatherless boy to have the companionship of caring men who are
dedicated to passing along their knowledge and helping the Scout attain his
full potential? I am not suggesting that women have no role here. I am just
sick and tired of constantly being told that boys and girls should be treated
equally all the time. Men and women are different, and so are boys and
girls! They get enough social interaction in school, etc.
Well, enough of my soap box. I am very happy to be on this list and look
forward to learning from all of you, and I hope I can contribute something
helpful, also.
Sincerely Yours,
Ann Balboni
