[JCMosher@aol.com: Royce Update at last]

I guess the following says it all. Not good news, I'm afraid. :,(

OK - At last an update on the status of Royce Burdick.
It=92s been much too long in coming -- sorry.
=20
In summary, I guess I=92d say that overall, she is not doing grea=
t. Maybe even
poorly. Back in early September, the dosage level of the Chemoth=
erapy was
reduced because it was just taking too much out of her. So now s=
he is on a
much lower but now weekly session. In her case they aren=92t des=
cribing it as
Phases or Steps. Her hair has begun to return and this is certai=
nly good -
though it=92s now in that in-between stage where she can=92t do a=
thing with it
and it gets in the way of the wigs somewhat. She is losing feeli=
ng in her
feet and lower legs and believes the scleraderma may have returne=
d. She=92s
feeling =93Ugly=94 and is having definite problems keeping the sp=
irits up.
=20
So much for the good news -- now on to the more unpleasant stuff=
and
probably the real reason I haven=92t responded before. It's pret=
ty gloomy.
=20
Essentially she=92s broke .... First, her van cracked an engine =
block about
Labor Day so she lost her transportation. She is working out a t=
rade for
another engine that someone abandoned on her property (long story=
) but can=92t
afford to pay anyone to put it in. She is totally out of money b=
ut has no
choice but to keep the drugs and Chemo going. The more frequent =
office
visits are running up the co-pay charges. On top of this, her mo=
rtgage
company has begun formal foreclosure proceedings on the house. T=
hey are
willing to work with her a little but are requiring a $5,000 =
=93down payment=94 -
not something that she can even consider. (Whoever the lawyer wa=
s who worked
out her divorce settlement - he should be taken out and shot! It=
isn=92t even
close to enough even with her condition prior to the Cancer)
=20
Not surprising - but her younger son is having serious trouble in=
school
stemming from the psychological impact of all that is going on pl=
us he has
never really coped well or recovered from having Dad run out on t=
hem. He has
had a long history of therapy over this but now she can no longer=
afford the
counselors that everyone admits he really needs.
=20
[Chuck's note: The younger boy has moderately severe ADHD.}

The older son is doing well in school but cannot participate in e=
xtra
curricular activities due to the transportation problems. If fac=
t, she is
considering dropping them from Scouts because she can no longer r=
egularly get
them to Troop or Patrol meetings anymore (She lives way out). I=
=92m trying to
convince her that Any participation is far better than none at al=
l.
=20
So it=92s a big time downhill spiral at this point. She has just=
written a
=93cry for help=94 letter that she is sending to just about every=
one imaginable
starting with Hillary Clinton and working down through just about=
every
federal and state agency she can find an address for -- hoping =
to find a
grant or some such that can help people in her situation. =20
=20
She is working on state welfare but with her current situation, o=
nce she
borrows a car, she cannot go down and wait any more than about 20=
minutes or
she just collapses. The usual wait is more like an hour if your =
lucky.
She=92s trying to work that out by phone or appointment but no s=
uccess yet. =20
=20
I guess that=92s it for now. She could use a lot of cheering up =
and an
occasional card or two. Her address is:
=20
Royce Burdick
4916 West Misty Willow Ln.
Glendale, Az 85310
=20
If you want to use E-Mail, feel free to send them via me at JCMos=
her@aol.com.
I see her at least weekly and will pass them on.
