Aquatics Instructor BSA without NCS?

Douglas A Richard (doug.richard@UNH.EDU)

Dear Scouts and Scouters:
I do not think that it is possible to obtain Aquatics Instructor
BSA without attending National Camp School. Let me explain.
On the back of my Aquatics Instructor certificate it states,

The person certified as an Aquatics Instructor, BSA has
satisfactorily completed a course of instruction at a National Camping
School conducted by the Boy Scouts of America that requires evidence of
proficiency in swimming, lifesaving, canoeing, and boating skills,
teaching and organizational techniques, and an understanding of the
principles of aquatics administration and safety. The card must also be
signed by the director of the aquatics section of the NCS.

Also keep in mind that people that are aquatic instructors are
not able to certify others as aquatic instructors.
As many of you people know that have attended camp school. The
work that you do in your section is just a part of what you learn at camp
school. You are also involved with the rest of the camp learning about
camp fire program, song leading, what other areas in camp do, OA, cub
scout residency camp, and other aspects of camp. You are also put into
a Troop and a Patrol.
I hope this clears things up. If the camp you work at during the
summer gives you an opportunity to go don't pass it up. You can also get
college credit for going.

Yours,
Douglas Richard
