Re: Adults, Adults, Everywhere Adults

Whenever I had ANY non-uniformed adults attending a campout,
I always had a "Guests Orientation" Friday night.
BTW: Prior to that, I told all parents (moms and dads
alike !) that they are always welcome to join us on a
campout, but they would have to let the boys be Scouts.
Anyhow, while the Patrol(s) were setting up camp, I took
all the non-uniformed leaders and we would have an
orientation (read mini training). At this orientation
I described what the campout was really all about
(leadership, patrols, personal growth, fun etc.). Once
they realized that there was a good reason for all this
outdoor fun (method), they were usually very good about
leaving the Scouts alone. In fact, they were usually
very surprised to see their son show so much responsibility,
and were usually very proud.
I wasn't afraid to give non-unformed adults a gentle
reminder if I thought they were interfering. Especially
former Webelos leaders that felt it natural to give
a helping hand. (BTW: I was WL and know how difficult it
is to keep hands off :)
This method really worked well for any number of
non-uniformed leaders. (I define uniformed leader as an
adult having the trained patch for the appropriate
position - in this case SA).
Hope this helps - D.McFarland
