MBs at Camp

Four, five or six MBs completed at camp is not that unrealistic and in
our troop is the norm.
BUT, it is done with planning. We start working with the boys several
months before they go to camp on what they want to take and building a
schedule that will get the job done. In those cases where there may
be lengthy observation or writing requirements we encourage them to
get them done before they go to camp. We try to get them to have a
balanced schedule of a couple of tough ones and a couple of easier
ones. Once in camp we help them keep on schedule. With three hours of
available class time in the AM and four in the PM there is plenty of
time to work on requirements. The SM and ASM spend their time at camp
visiting the MB areas to see how the scouts are progressing and
assisting the MB counselors if needed. WHen the scouts are done early
there is the payoff of free swim and extra time at fun places like the
lake or shooting range. In the evenings, under the lantern, there is
scout organized work sessions (it is their own idea) where they sit
down and work together on written and other common events.
(self-directed work groups...I love it.)
Now, they all view the formal summer camp as rank and requirements
working camp. There are plenty of other campouts throughout the year
that are just fun and no-work campouts so we do keep a balance of fun
and advancement in our total annual program.
But, the key factor in all this is the annual plan the scouts put
together. They plan their work and work their plan.
