Attached is a letter I have sent to boys who did not cross over to the
current troop in town or those who dropped out of it. To make a very
long story short, after 5 years with that troop and 10 years of CSA/BSA
I have been asked by a charter rep to help reorganize an inactive troop.
One of my biggest beefs with the current troop in town is that it is no
longer run by the boys, but by the SM and ASM. The reasons I am given
include: 1. We ask them and they don't tell us. 2. They don't want to
do it. 3. We tried it 1-2-3 years ago and it didnt work. 4. The trip is
too complicated too much involved. The patrol leaders are selected by
the Sm, the ASPL is elected as a most popular guy and the SPL is the
previous years ASPL.
My question to the group is this: Am I living in a dream world or are
the principles in my letter possible? One of the things I feel is that
you must give the boys a chance to "fail" not so they get hurt, but so
they can "Learn"!
This is not an easy reorganisation. There are alot of
personalitys involved. I believe there are boys out there who want a
program that is different from the existing troops. I have followed the
discussions on "Why to start a new troop" with much interest. I am
trying to find out if there are boys who want to be a part of another
troop so I have sent this out along with a newspaper article.
I DID NOT SEND THIS TO BOYS IN THE EXISTING TROOP AS THE D\E FELT
IT WOULD START A RANGE WAR.
