Subject: Merit Badge Factories
Dear Scouts and Scouters;
A lot of people have been talking about how some camps are just
giving away merit badges and not making sure that the scouts are earning
them. Well I have a couple of ideas to help you out and help improve the
program that you are getting at camp.
To begin with you should get a hold of the Program or the Camp
Director and talk to them. Tell them that your Scouts are not getting
proper instruction. Tell them that the instructors are skipping over
requirments. Tell them that the classes are to big and your Scouts are
not getting enough attention or practice time. Tell them anything that
bothers you about the camp program in general. Boy Scout Camp is set up
to help the Scouts and leaders with the Troops year round program.
Handing out unearned merit badges is not part of the program. If the
Camp Director or Program Director have any brains they will change the
way that the camp merit badge counciling is run. But you need to tell
them otherwise the program will continue as usual. If this does not
work try talking to your District or Council Executive. If this still
doesn't work there is no law saying you have to stay in council to go to
summer camp. We all know how much it costs for one scout to go to
camp. I figure for a Troop of 20 Scouts to go to camp it would
cost between $3000 and $4000 not including travel or leader supervision
(a week of camp costing between $150 to $200). I would think that we
should always demand good customer service from our camps and make them
work for us.
To recap please talk to the people that run your camp and try to
change it for the better by telling them what is wrong. By saying
nothing you are in fact telling them that they are doing a good job and
should continue what they are doing.
Well that is all I got. Any other thoughts on how to help make
camps better would be appreciated and welcome.
