I operate both a Troop and Co-ed Post. I enjoy working with both. I agree
that the high school group does very well as co-ed. Though the Freshman tend
to isolate themselves from the larger group and be more "boyish" than the 10-
12th graders.

The Troop (Middle School) does well as a single gender group, and though they
talk big on the issue of girls, their bark is bigger than their bite. They seem
to be shy around girls.

As a school board member I have read many articles on the success of single
gender education in elementry and middle school. Even some pubic schools are
finding success, though I don't know if they'll be able to continue due to
legal issues.

In short, the separation of the genders has it's place, depending on the age
and goal of the group. It is unfortunate that in our zeal for justice and
equality, we have lost touch with our humanity!

I wander why BSA doesn't just set-up Scout Troops for girls! The same program,
but keep the younger kids separate. We have a famous catholic high school that
is all boys, and just next door is the all girls school. Something for
everyone.
