Two thoughts on the subject besed on recent posings.
In the Will Rogers Council in the past we have had two all girl
Explorer POsts. One was the Cheerleading Squad in Ponca City with the
Council Executive's wife as the Post Adviser. Lasted several years.
Another was the local Senior Girl Scout Troop who co-registered as an
Explorer Post. This allowed them to continue work on their Gold
Award, sell cookies, etc. AND allowed them to go to Philmont, MExico
and on one of our District sponsored 4 day hiking trips. They
attended all of the latter events as Explorer's because the local
(Magic Empire Council GSUSA) rules were essentially impossible for
them to satisfy on any of these events as Senior Girl Scouts. This
unit dropped when the membership interest shifted away from the
outdoor program.
In another matter, we have had very great difficulty in froming a Cub
Scout Unit at a number of the local smaller communities because it is
NOT coed. Mom and Dad drive into the scholl (15 to 30 miles in some
cases) and want to drop off ALL their kids for a program rather than
just the boys. As a result, out big competitor id Camp Fire. GSUSA,
like BSA, is a dead issue in these communities!
