as the training chairman, I wanted to encourage units to increase the
quality and quantity of unit level trained leaders. The training
committee decided that we would present awards to the top three troops
"Top Hat" and top three packs "Top Hand".
Awards materials are for the "top hat" award,
three plastic/paper party hats with appropriate numbers pasted on.
The top
hand award is the 1,2, and three fingers graphics from "zingbats.font"
blown up to page size, then glued to foam board, which doubles as the
stand. As part of the district dinner, the training committee presents:
adult leader training recognitions,
thank yous to the course directors
and staff members of all
the past year's courses (1 SMF, 10 CSBLT, 2 OWL, and misc stuff),
woodbadge beads to the cub scout trainers and boy scout leaders recipients,
then the unit training recognition awards. The district training newsletter
carried the unit names and numbers, along with the award of merit recipients.
I have seen the "silly" idea turn into a meaningful award which some units
actually strive for.
Oh yea, the original idea came from the pages of the Cub Scout Roundtable
Commissioner and Staff Training Syllagus. The next RT Commissioner and Staff
training is at Camp Resolute, Bolton, Ma on October 28, 1995. We do both
the Boy Scout and Cub Scout flavors!
