Yes, there are weight limites for horse rides, but the medical staff
in base camp (health lodge) also has a weight/height chart that they
use. This chart is published in the materials that Philmont mails out
(in the Peaks book), and is really a guideline, rather than a
hard-and-fast rule. In general, the health lodge defers to
recommendation of the personal physician who filled out the medical
form. If the physician signed the form indicating permission to
participate, then usually the health lodge won't overrule that. An
exception already mentioned is blood pressure. Anyone over the blood
pressure restrcition will not be allowed on the trail. As a warning,
for those travelling from the lower altitudes, your blood pressure
tends to go up, so if you are borderline at lower altitudes, talk to
your doctor. If you have medication for (normally) high blood
pressure, they (health lodge) will want to see it, but will let you on
the trail if it is controlled.
