A few years ago I started a new Troop 24 award called the "Forget Me Knot".
It can be awarded only to a select few troop members, and has been awarded
only 5 times, 3 times to Life Scouts and twice to Wood Badge-trained
Scouters. It is awarded to someone who should know better and should be
experienced enough to know to be prepared. It will never be awarded to
a New Scout nor in fact to anyone below Star Scout.
The award is a certificate (printed on pink paper) and a strand of hot pink
parachute cord about 8-10 inches long, long enough to tie around the finger
of the recipient.
Three of the awards were presented for forgetting to bring a sleeping bag
on a campout (in one case, the recipient was remarking how light his backpack
was!), once for losing not one, but two canteens at Philmont, and the fifth
award was given to the previous Scoutmaster who was so involved in bringing
and setting up his computer to do the scoring at Camporee that he forgot to
bring his backpack at all!
By the way, all of the recipients are now Eagles, except for me. It was
not real cold that night, just enough to keep me awake for most of it.
