Not very humerous, but as a brand new Assistant Scoutmaster who knew
nothing about anything except what he remembered from Tenderfoot days in
1951..., over thirty years before...

It is winter at Fort Richardson, Alaska, and the temperature is about 5
below zero, and we are having a Freeze-O-Ree. My son and I have set up a
tent which I will use, and his gear is in another that he and friends have
set up. There is a Troop Tent with a sheepherder stove in it.

One of the boys comes to me and says "Fred (not the real name) is acting
strange." I went to look. By now it is about 10 below.

Fred is trembling and his lips are blue. He has no hat. He has no mittens
or gloves. He has on a jeans jacket over a T-shirt. He is wearing blue
jeans with no long underwear underneath. He is wearing sneakers. Fred, I
hasten to say, was in a Patrol that was not the one I was working with, and
it was the first time I saw hime that trip.

So we put him i the cab of my truck, fired it up, turned up the heater, and
thawed him out. We poured cocoa down his throat. The boys scrounged among
their spare gear and outfitted him appropriately. He actually enjoyed the
outing after that.

His parents each told me that the other parent was responsible for checking
him out at the door....
