I think the adjective "novice" applies to the degree of cave
exploring. If I were to just walk into the cave, look around with my
flashlight, then walk out, all the while standing erect, I would say
that is "novice cave exploring".
Conversely, if I needed to shim through areas 18 inches high, use rope
climbing gear to descend into areas, or need to swim underwater to access
other areas of the cave, I would call that "expert exploring".
