understand your abbriviations!!! >

Welcome to the list, Eileen!
Abbreviations can be confusing but don't worry. After a week or two you'll
be doing 'Scoutspeak" like a veteran.

Since I don't know if you were referring to Boy Scout abbreviations or
general ones, please allow me to share some of both. BTW, If you have
questions others might too, so I thought I'd post this to the general list.

General List Abbreviations
BTW -- By the way
IMHO -- In my humble opinion
PMJI -- Pardon me for jumping in
LOL -- Laughing out loud
ROFL -- Rolling on floor, laughing

Boy Scout Abbreviations
BOR -- Board of Review, final step in obtaining next rank
COR -- Chartered Organization Representative -- go-between for the troop
TROOP -- A group of Boy Scouts, further divided into PATROLS of 6-10 boys.
PACK -- A group of Cub Scouts, further divided into DENS.
WEBELOS -- The group between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts
TIGERS -- Short for Tiger Cubs, the youngest scouts.
JLT -- Junior Leader Training, a leadership course for youth with a troop
position.
YIS -- Yours In Scouting, a favorite sign-off
WWW -- A favorite sign off of people who have been honored with election to
the Order of the Arrow, a service group of campers within the BSA.
ASM -- Assistant Scoutmaster
SM -- Scoutmaster, adult leader, answers to the troop committee.
CC -- Comittee Chairperson, head of the troop committee (adults)
SPL -- Senior Patrol Leader. The youth elected to the highest leadership
position within the troop. The SPL should actually do more talking than the
SM. (not just "shut up, sit down, Mr --- wants to talk", either!)
DE, CE -- District Executive, Council Executive. Paid professional staff members
who help volunteer leaders within geographic districts and councils to put
on
the scouting program for youth. DE's work for the CE.
WoodBadge -- A high-intensity adult leader training course. The highest level
of adult training available for volunteers.
"I used to be a (animal)" -- The WoodBadge patrol or group this individual
was a member of. There are a lot of lifetime friendships among patrol
members, even in different courses. Thus the pride in advertising your
affiliation.

YIS,
Mike Derleth
ASM Troop 32, Monroe LA
