Re: smoking

Ted, let's not let our emotions cloud our thinking.

>But if they know you smoke, and aren't trying to quit, then you are
>teaching them that good people smoke.

There are many *good* people who smoke but most of us (good and bad) have a bad
habit or two.

> . . . kids who smoke despite the
>law and like it, can and do (not all do, but too many do) decide that there
>are other pleasurable activities prohibited by 'wrong' laws, and decide to
>smoke pot. And pot (and the next stupid law thing, methamphetamines) lead
>to an enhanced (fallaciously enhanced) sense of well being, thus to
>non-achievement, and possibly even worse things. This is not an inexorable
>path for kids, but it is an all too common path. It starts with undertaking
>an illegal, pleasurable activity, which engenders further disrespect for
>law, and disbelief in the purpose of law.

There are many temptations in life, but most of us resist them based on our mora
l standards and beliefs. Some of these are outlined in the Scout Law.
We need to concentrate on the good contributions of individuals balanced against
the bad.
