Well folks, I have just realized why I never experienced having to search
for a stray hiker when we were hiking our own hikes. Just remembered that
I was that stray. The group, we were teens at the time, was bellyaching
about the really tough climb we had been told about for that days hike
and the group leader had called for a meeting at the base of the Mtn to
decide if we were going to cancel the remainder of the trip to avoid it.
I expected the group to vote to wimp out and had no intention of
stopping, I was Katahdin bound, so I hiked up and over the Mtn without
them. It turned out that I was right they had decided to wimp out and
hiked out and called base camp to pick them up, then realized I was not
there too late to go looking for me. I had no food, so hiked out to a
hunting camp and bought some fresh baked bread and homemade jelly and a
few boxes of cereal. Hey, it was a hunting camp, not a store. The group
leaders got on the trail ahead of me and met up with me again 48 hours
later. Frankly I didn't need them anymore at that point but didn't object
to the companionship either. So, OK we did have a lost soul if you count
me, tho I was never lost, at least not from my point of view. I guess now
that I think about it I would not have wanted to trade places with the
group leader when he figured out I had gone missing. Ah solitude.
