Hi Everyone;
The intro to Scouts-L says I should post a brief introduction.
I'm Berk Moss. I serve as an ASM in Troop 204 in the Multnomah
Village neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. We are in the Pioneer District
of the Cascade Pacific Council. We are a large active Troop with over 65
registered boys and 24 Assistant Scoutmasters. We camp every month of the
year (snow caves in January) and have about 40 boys on a weekend campout.
We had over 1100 scout-days in camp last year. We offer "High Adventures"
each summer in addition to summer camp. One recent "High Adventures" have
been a 500 mile bike ride from Crater Lake National Park over the Cascade
Mountains through the Willamette Valley over the Coast Range to the beach
and back over the Coast Range to Portland. Another was a 75 mile canoe
trip down the Willamette River. About half of the ASM's are actually
college boys who return to the troop when possible to help with the
outdoor program.
Our troop really tries to use the patrol method and boy leadership.
My step-son, Loren, is the Senior Patrol Leader and my son, Eric, is the
Troop Quartermaster. Both are Life Scouts working on Eagle. Eric is
working on staff of Camp Baldwin this summer. Loren and a dozen other
Scouts from our Troop will go to Siberia this August and help start a
Troop there. Twenty Russian boys will come back with our Scouts and spend
three weeks here.
My job in the troop is working with new Scouts and (more
importantly) their parents. I work to explain the methods and ideals of
Scouting and their advancement through First Class. I also work to
orient the parents into their role working with the whole group rather
than individually with their son.
I took Woodbadge training last year and am working my ticket while I
can. I also serve on the Pioneer District Advancement Committee.
