Purpose

Terry Slade (TMSLADE@PCAD-ML.ACTX.EDU)

B-P wrote a book to teach his soldiers how to "scout". They were
lacking in those skills and he wanted as many to survive the war as
possible. On a trip home, he noticed some young boys had taken the
book and had used it to learn those same skills taught the soldiers.
POOF!!!!!!!
Scouting was born.
It wasn't started to teach God, country, or anything but scouting
skills. Period.... The other stuff did come about as adults tried to
see some all inspiring ideals into a simple idea. Yes, some
inner-city troops that camp once a year do exist with the help of one
or two dedicated leaders.
As the school systems have failed and the family unit as we knew
it fell away, scouting has stepped foward to fill the gap. It is a
sad day indeed when a boy MUST join scouting just to learn the pledge
or learn some skill that an absent father can't teach.
Hurray for SCOUTING....We fill the gap...But please don't tell me
that scouting is all powerful and an awe inspiring bunch. We are just
a group of adults and boys on a quest. A quest to better ourselves
and have some fun along the way.
I started this whole discusion by saying that Eagle is easier now
than 20 years ago. Then came the purpose of scouting. Wow! What a
responce. I think B-P would have been proud that Scouting has come as
far as it has and that we were up to the task. I still say that
without the camping aspect of scouting, scouting as we know it would
not have survived. The first thing B-P did with his first troop was
to go camping on Brown sea island.
As for band players having more teamwork skills than baseball
players...can you really tell me that every single musician is
playing or just pretending. But then that would probably be for
another discusion at a later date. YIS
