Baden-Powell was once asked why there was such an emphasis on the outdoor
program in the Boy Scouts. I must paraphrase his reply, as I do not have
ready access to the source of the quote (nor, in truth, do I remember
just when and where I read it):
"We do outdoor activities because that is what boys like. If they liked
knitting, why then, we would teach them knitting."
Remember, the outdoor program is only one of the eight methods of
Scouting in the BSA. The three aims of the program are, and always have
been, to foster good character, citizenship, and personal fitness in
the boys entrusted to our care.
I have two Scouts who don't like camping very much. Should I kick them
out of my Troop because of this? I think not. Rather, I try to find
things they like and offer some of those activities. For example, we
crewed a tall sailing ship for a weekend last August. Both boys were
eager and enthusiastic participants in this activity. Our Patrol Leaders'
Council plans a variety of activities.
