I decided that I need to add my own two bits. I am an Eagle and serve
as Lodge Secretary in the OA, scouting's honor campers. I have served three
years as a summer camp staffer. Presently I am an Assistant Scoutmaster for
program development in my troop. As a recent scout I can safely say that
the programs that scouting offers are for the purpose of teaching young men
the ideals of high moral character and leadership skills. Merit badges and
outdoors programs are a tool that is used to make these lessons more fun
and exciting while reinforcing them.
As for the nessecity of a camping program, I agree that it helps
gain the interest of prospective scouts but I have friend who is an
Assistant Scoutmaster of an inner-city troop whose only campout is a
community funded trip to summer camp yet they have almost 30 active boys in
his troop year round. Not every scout is a great outdoorsman but they could
be a great leader and productive citizen. I have kids in my troop who
couldn't pitch a tent if their life depended upon it, but they stilll come
and learn and are Scouts the same as everyone else. They grow and learn
from scouting and that is the most important thing.
