Philmont Trek

Bob McGwier (n4hy@CCR-P.IDA.ORG)

703-H-9 (our crew identification number) had a near perfect trek from July 3
through 15. The only problems we ran into were at Miranda camp where the
staff was surly to one of my boys, closed program area in the middle of a
Saturday afternoon (ostensibly for a chapel service which I do not understand
why it could not be held at a time other than program time) and then told
us to come back for black powder rifle shooting the next morning. We chose
not to, but our sister crew did. Our sister crew got there at 7:45 AM for
an 8 AM opening. The staff rolled out of their teepee's at 8:30 and went
to the staff cabin for breakfast and remained there until 9:15 AM. When they
returned only one rifle would fire and they left five loaded rifles laying
around that would not fire. A LONG item was attached to my crew advisor's
survey ;-). Other than this, we had a great time. Our toughest day was
not climbing Mt. Baldy, but hiking from Dean Cow through Turkey Creek Canyon
to Harlan. Even though we started at 5:30 AM, it was insufferably hot by
the time we arrived at Harlan at 9:45. I pity those who started later. I
had an experienced crew chief and a good crew. We had a blast! It rained
only one day for 30 minutes (at Miranda) and was clear and blue until we
returned to base camp on the 14-th and then the cold front went through and
started the monsoon flow. WHEW! We had an early breakfast on the 15th
and flew east. We were diverted away from CLeveland due to a horrible
storm and had to go to Buffalo to refuel. Since there were 90 of us on that
plane, and we missed the connection to Newark, the pilot took a decision to
fly directly to Newark and then back to Cleveland. Continental did not want
90 angry scouts sleeping in the Cleveland terminal. Needless to say, the
dozen or so other passengers were not all happy campers ;-).
